Raymond Lully or Ramon Llull [in Catalan] Raymundus Lullius or Raimundo Llulio

Spanish poet, philosopher and theologian born in Palma de Mallorca, then belonging to the kingdom of Aragon, considered the greatest Hispanic thinker of the Middle Ages and considered the founder of Orientalism in the Western. Of aristocratic origins and dispersive youth, he radically changed his behavior after having a mystical vision (1265).

 After a long pilgrimage that took him to North Africa and Jerusalem, he returned to Majorca to devote himself to the study of Christian philosophy and theology and of Arab language and thought. In addition to numerous scientific treatises on medicine, geometry and astronomy, he stood out above all for his literary production of mystical inspiration.

After a new mystical experience (1272) on Mount Randa de Mallorca, he began to write his main work, Ars magna, a collection of treatises, including Arbor scientiae or The Tree of Science, in which he postulated the existence of general scientific principles which encompassed particular knowledge.
