Teachers in Florida are forced to hide books from students

This measure was motivated by the law HB 1467, approved by the legislature of the State of Florida and sanctioned in March of last year by Governor Ron DeSantis, of the Republican Party. According to prosecutors, the aim of the legislation is to protect the rights of parents to control the type of material their children have access to in schools.

DeSantis, the politician responsible for enacting the rule, said parents have every right to be involved in their children's education.

We will not allow politicians to deny parents the right to know what is being taught in our schools. I am proud to sign this legislation that guarantees the transparency of the study program”, declared the governor.

According to critics, the attitude is an instrument of censorship.

They say this is a weapon used by conservatives in their fight against so-called woke culture, a term adopted in the United States. to designate people who have made it their duty to address issues of inequality or discrimination based on race, gender or orientation sexual.

“We refute the ideology woke up. We fight the woke up in the legislature, we fight the woke up in schools, we fight the woke up in business,” said Governor DeSantis in a speech following his re-election in November 2022.

The law took effect in July 2022 and requires schools to ensure that the books offered are free of pornography, and in line with the needs of the students, i.e. age-appropriate of the young people.

In December of the same year, the Florida Department of Education extended the rule's application to libraries available to teachers in classrooms. Expert pedagogues denounce that this measure affects not only the training of students but also the creation of reading habits, whose benefits extend throughout life.
