Check out what was hot:
1. Toyota Corolla: 1,150,000 units sold
The Toyota Corolla was the world's best-selling car in 2019, and the reliable Japanese sedan continued to hold the top spot with over 1.1 million sales in 2020. Much of this success is due to the car's popularity in the US, despite the country's waning interest in sedans.
2. Toyota RAV4: 1,070,000 units
Another Toyota ranks second in worldwide sales, thanks to the rise in midsize SUVs. The RAV4 has seen a 10% increase in sales year-over-year, and comes close to the Corolla in missing less than 1.1 million sales. Low maintenance costs, a smooth ride and bold styling all contribute to its success.
3. Honda CR-V: 885,000 units
The RAV4 is followed by another Japanese SUV, with the Honda CR-V selling 885,000 units in 2020. Like the RAV4, the CR-V enters the large family SUV – the world's most popular segment – where it occupies 12% of the total market share. The CR-V is well built, practical and well equipped, although its fuel economy is limited.
4. Nissan Sentra: 705,000 units
It occupies the same segment as the best-selling Corolla, where it made up 705,000 units out of a total sales of 5.1 million. The Sentra saw a 3% year-over-year increase in sales despite a 14% decline in overall compact sedan sales.
5. Toyota Camry: 635,000 units
The Toyota Camry completes a Japanese Top 5, taking 635,000 sales. The Camry is the Corolla's biggest relative, and has a 20% market share in the D-segment class. Like the Corolla, the Camry is very popular with American customers, thanks to its generous interior space and strong reliability.
