Popular Pharmacy Program in Brazil will receive five new medications

Last Thursday (29), the Ministry of Health announced the introduction of five more medicines for popular pharmacies. These remedies are used to treat cardiovascular disease and diabetes. According to the folder, this is the first addition of new drugs since 2011, that is, Farmácia Popular do Brasil had not received new drugs in its list for 10 years. It is estimated that these drugs will be available to the population within 30 days.

The drugs that are now being distributed by the program are: Amlodipine Besylate 5mg, Metoprolol Succinate 25mg, Spironolactone 25mg, Furosemide 40mg and Dapagliflozin 10mg. The first four are to deal with the control of arterial hypertension, being offered free of charge. The latter is used to control type 2 diabetes mellitus, which is associated with cardiovascular disease, and will be offered as a co-payment. It is believed that more than 2.7 million Brazilians will benefit from this new measure, which, in terms of curiosity, was announced on World Heart Day.

“Brazil has one of the broadest public policies in relation to cardiovascular diseases, which starts in primary care, in the 48,000 basic health units. We have a pharmaceutical assistance program, which was expanded today, with more drugs available at Farmácia Popular do Brasil. And, on the other hand, we have a very wide specialized care network, which is where we take care of the most serious cases” explained the Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, in an interview for the program A Voz do Brasil.

According to Queiroga, high blood pressure is the most prevalent disease of the cardiovascular system, and four of the five new drugs are aimed at treating it. “We have to change people's habits, such as reducing salt in food, encouraging weight loss, not smoking. These risk factors are common to almost all cardiovascular diseases. highlighted. The minister also alleges that only a small portion of people receive the correct treatment for this disease, and that half of the carriers do not even know they are hypertensive.
