The participation of students in the 3rd year of high school plummeted in 2021 and 2022
Trying to mitigate the negativity that this type of situation has on the exam, the Minister of Education, Victor Godoy, reported that the number of participants in 2022 surpassed the number of students finishing high school.
Participation in ENEM also dropped
The numbers released by the MEC show that all this variation in rates is due to the greater approval of students for the 3rd year of high school in 2021, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, there really was a drop in subscribers in the total numbers. For example, in 2017, there were the number of 1.7 million subscribers, while in 2021, only 1.1 million.
Both situations contributed to Enem 2021 having the lowest number of participants since the beginning of the exam, in 1998. The year 2022 unfortunately did not solve this problem, as it was the second lowest number of participants since 2009.
This is not the only worrying factor regarding the attendance of students in secondary education and ENEM
Another negative point observed in this edition of the exam was the number of participants abstaining, since, while there were 2,351,513 candidates present to take the exams. Furthermore, according to the number of enrollments, there was an abstention of 1,124,713 students, resulting in a percentage of 32.4%.
