Ghost Town is over 300 years old
The Sertão dos Inhamuns is located in a region between the Atlantic Forest and the Amazon Forest, in the Sertaneja Depression, in which the predominant vegetation is caatinga, which covers the municipalities of Aiuba, Arneiroz, Catarina, Parambu, Saboeiro and Taua.
And this is where the Cococi district is located, founded in 1708 by Colonels Francisco Alves Feitosa and Lourenço Alves Feitosa. At the time, Cococi was a very important city for the hinterland region of Ceará, with a great impact on the colonization of the region.
The target of many reports, due to the historical character of the city, with its ruins of houses, churches and other constructions, Cococi has already sheltered around 2 thousand people in its territory, according to the census carried out by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, in 1950.
In 2012, only seven people lived in the region, which was previously dominated by the heirs of the Feitosa family and had city status, according to State Law n. 3.858/1957.
How does Cococi become a ghost town?
Although the political emancipation of the municipality happened with the elevation of the district to the category of city, in 1965 Cococi became a district of Parambu again, which led to the departure of the Feitosa family and the other residents of city.
This is because, due to the fact that the region is located in an area of sertão, the constant droughts and the corruption have become an issue, making Cococi an unattractive location for investment economical. Thus, residents began to look for other places to live.
Today, Cococi has a square, a registry office, a tax office, a hotel, the Town Hall and several residences. abandoned, which are commonly the subject of research by scholars of history or become the setting for the recording of films.
