After seeing an airplane graveyard on television, 15-year-old electrical engineer Bruce Campbell decided he wanted to live in one. Today, he is a 73-year-old man who spent more than US$ 100,000 to make his dream come true and live in an old plane.

In an interview with CNBC Make It, the elderly man said he made this decision in 1999. To that end, he hired a salvage company to find him a plane.

A aircraftfound was a Boeing 727, with capacity for 200 passengers. The plane was in Greece and was used to transport the remains of tycoon Aristotle Onassis in 1975. The man was a shipping tycoon, married to former US First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

Campbell paid $100,000 for the plane, which was in a junkyard. In addition, he had to pay another US$ 120,000 for transport from Greece to the elderly man's property, in Hillsboro, in the United States.

The aircraft also had to go through a process of engine removal. Thus, it was unable to fly.

Elderly man paid a large amount to live on the plane

Bruce Campbell renovated the entire interior of the plane. To make it habitable, it needed to install a shower, sink, washing machine, refrigeratorand other basic utensils. Except a stove.

“I'm a nerd. I don't cook. So it's a minimal kitchen area”, explained the elderly man. To feed himself, he uses a microwave and a toaster.

Inside the plane, there is also a sleeping area. There, he installed a futon sofa and a workbench.

To live on the plane, the elderly man disbursed a sum of US$ 15,000 in a renovation that lasted about two years. In addition, he pays US$ 370 per month in taxes, water and electricity.

Most of the time, Bruce Campbell is dedicated to restoring old computer systems. Also, he uses his electrical engineering knowledge by repairing electrical systems on the plane.
