If your profession is one of these, know that there is exemption from paying IPVA for 2023

The arrival of a new year announces many things for Brazilians. In addition to new perspectives and dreams, the year begins with the payment of the Motor Vehicle Ownership Tax (IPVA) for motorcycle owners, cars, trucks and buses.

The amount to be paid can vary between 1% and 6% per state. Aside from that tax, there's a lot to worry about. So, be aware of what is reserved by law so you don't get lost in the accounts!

The advantage, for some, is in the profession. Certain professionals are completely exempt from paying IPVA. So if you fit into one of these categories, know that you won't have to pay the tax. In general, what guarantees the exemption is the profession, illness or some type of injury.

If the tax is not paid, the owner of the vehicle may receive fines or any other consequences related to the Driver's License

(driver's license). If the IPVA payment is not up-to-date, the owner may still be included as a defaulter by Serasa or SPC, denying his name to financial institutions.

Professions that guarantee exemption from IPVA

Professionals who use the vehicle to work, such as taxi drivers and drivers, benefit from the exemption. If you carry out any of these activities, be aware of your rights. Check out:

  • Owners of agricultural machinery;
  • Owners of construction machinery;
  • Taxi drivers;
  • Motorcycle taxi drivers;
  • Transport of persons with diplomatic rights;
  • Owners of buses and school transport vans.

Other reasons that grant exemption from the payment of IPVA are:

  • Year of manufacture of the vehicle;
  • Disability or illness of people who have suffered from stroke, cancer, autism, amputation and lymphoma.

In some cases, the criterion for exemption is the year of manufacture of the vehicle. However, time may vary by state. See the period in which each state stops charging the IPVA:

  • 30 years or more – Santa Catarina;
  • 23 years or older – Alagoas;
  • 20 years or more – São Paulo, Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, Acre and Rio Grande do Sul;
  • 18 years or older – Mato Grosso;
  • 15 years or more – Amapá, Amazonas, Bahia, Ceará, Distrito Federal, Espírito Santo, Maranhão, Pará, Paraíba, Piauí and Rio de Janeiro;
  • 10 years or more – Goiás, Rio Grande do Norte and Roraima.
