Like Atlantis: Underwater cities could be the future for us

In a future that may be getting closer due to rising sea levels, some specialists have designed cities that can be very well populated by us human beings. See expert opinions on the topic and how these underwater cities would be made.

dystopian future

Although it seems fiction scientific, some experts believe that we are heading towards a dystopian future in which we will live in completely underwater cities. Expert and futurist Philip Pauley, who studies the potential of submerged cities, reports that this would not be as unrealistic a solution as it appears to be.

“The most notable pioneer of underwater housing was Jacques Cousteau. He built several underwater habitats in the 1970s. These used to be quite small, but nothing stops us from building something bigger. We would only need time, money and resources”, says philip.

NASA's interest

Philip has even created his own model of an underwater community, which consists of a core biosphere with other smaller biospheres around this core. This project, on paper, has already attracted interest from film producers and even NASA.

But how would these cities work? What would the oxygen system look like and what would life be like underwater?

Explaining Atlantis

The design of a dome around the city is the most obvious, extracting oxygen from the surface or surrounding water.

“Water can move around it relatively easily. Can handle more pressure. Alternatively, a more cost-efficient way would be a cube, but that depends on where you want to build the city. Having a chain hitting a flat surface is never a good idea,” explains Phillip.

Phillip informs that the location of the cities are the key to make it work, since it is necessary to have sunlight to live well and to be able to create other living beings underwater. Phillip, despite being vegan, informs that in the model of his cities it is possible to raise cattle and chickens, apart from the consumption of fish.
