More than 50% of Nestlé products may be harmful to health

According to data released by the most recent Health Star Rating (HSR) report, most products manufactured and sold by Nestlé can be considered “unhealthy”.

The HSR is a system used by the governments of Australia and New Zealand to measure how healthy the foods sold in the two countries of Oceania are.

In the measurement, the system's specialists measure how much salt, fiber, electrolytes, sugar, fat and other substances exist in each food sold in the country.

To classify the products, five stars are used, with half a star being the lowest rating, given to products considered unhealthy, and five stars the highest rating applied to healthy products.

More than half of Nestlé products scored below 5 stars

recently the Nestléwas urged by ShareAction, an NGO focused on sustainability efforts, to reduce the marketing of products considered unhealthy.

The company was sensitive to the recommendations and intensified the production adjustments it was already making. Among these efforts is to promote more widely the ingredients used in the manufacture of its products.

Armed with this nutritional information, the Health Star Rating researchers were able to classify them on their health scale.

According to the HSR, the ranking of Nestlé products sold in Australia and New Zealand was as follows:

  • 30% of products received at least 3.5 stars;
  • 18% of the products scored between 1.5 and 3.5 stars;
  • 17% of the items were rated less than 1.5 stars;
  • Another 35% of the products do not fit the classification because they were not developed for human consumption.

In response to the disclosure of the data, Nestlé reported that it continues to intensify its efforts to adapt products marketed to the health standards of the countries where the survey was carried out, as well as throughout the world.
