The spooky stories behind fairy tales
Children's fairy tales try not to send negative messages, such as encouraging revenge, resentment and cruelty. That's why we often see pious princesses, who don't punish those who hurt them and live happily ever after. This is not exactly what is told in the original stories: the victims of the story are often killed, abandoned or, when they succeed, make their villains pay dearly. See some original versions and compare with the ones you already know:
snow White
The Queen requested, in the original version, that the Huntsman rip out Snow White's lungs and liver so that she could eat. Upon getting away with it and marrying the prince, the princess invites the Queen to the ceremony, and once there, she is forced to wear a hot iron shoe and dance to her death.
mulan
In the original version, Mulan's end is tragic: upon returning home to find her father dead, Mulan sees that her mother is already married to another man and is forced to become a concubine. Therefore, she commits suicide.
Rapunzel
When the witch discovers that the prince is visiting Rapunzel, she cuts the princess's hair and abandons her in the desert. With no news, the prince decides to return to the Tower and has his eyes pierced by the witch.
Cinderella
The original story about the slipper is much more bizarre: Cinderella's sisters cut off chunks of her toes to fit the shoe, bloodying it. At Cinderella's wedding, when the white pigeons fly, they go to the girls and gouge their eyes out.
Little Red Riding Hood
The original tale had to be almost completely changed due to its oddities: the wolf killed and hid the skin of Little Red Riding Hood's grandmother in the pantry cupboard and fed her the remains and blood of her grandmother. Terrible, isn't it?
