The term became better known in the country from 2001. It concerns a company that starts with very low costs, but with a great potential to grow and profit quickly. Currently the term is linked to a group of people working with numerous uncertainties, but looking for repeatable and scalable business models.
Registered in the ninth position, the city of Joinville is the first – which is not a capital city – to appear in the ranking. This assessment was carried out in more than a thousand municipalities in a hundred countries. “Joinville is the ideal place to install software, information and fintech startups”, pointed out the publication.
Growth in the number of startups
A recent survey also showed that the city has more than 167 active startups, all with more than 2,300 employees. Compared to 2020, the number of small businesses in Joinville grew by 44%. Seven years ago, only five startups were created per year. In 2021, 29 new companies were created in this format.
“This survey shows the maturation of Joinville's innovation ecosystem and also shows the integration of this segment. Here in Joinville, innovation is closely related to the industry, which ends up accelerating the process, because it needs new technologies to remain competitive in the market", claimed Fernando Bade, the secretary of Economic Development and Innovation.
Regarding earnings, around 52% of these companies reported annual earnings of one hundred thousand reais; 16% estimate earnings between one hundred thousand and R$500 thousand; 30% of them reported earnings of BRL 500,000 per year. Between 2020 and 2022, Joinville rose 16 positions among entrepreneurial cities.
Demand for investors continues
Bade highlighted the municipality's participation in Tech Road, which is a mutual cooperation between the cities of Joinville, Florianópolis, Curitiba, Porto Alegre and Caxias do Sul. The objective is to attract investments and facilitate the exchange of information, in addition to encouraging business between technology companies and others.
He also informed that this union helps attract more investors to the southern region of Brazil. Bade also claimed that these positive points lead them to a prominent position in the rankings.
The city launched an Innovation Ecosystem Management Plan where startups, industries, gyms and the municipality – among others – then represented. Working together, they seek to drive ecosystem growth and innovation in the city.
