Myths about coffee and wine

See below for more information about the myths related to popular beverages.

Coffee myth and its mortality

After waking up, the first thing that Brazilians will prepare is their black coffee, to drink at the beginning of the day and have their energy renewed for the next few hours. There is a myth that the consumption of this coffee increases the chance of death by heart attack. A study carried out with more than 200,000 people showed the opposite of this statement.

The survey found that people who drank one to three cups of coffee a day, even with a teaspoon sugar in each, are up to 30% less likely to die than those who did not drink any amount of coffee.

Even with several studies on caffeine, there are those who still believe that coffee is harmful to health and that it should be drunk with caution because of the “addiction” it causes. This prejudice against drinking is due to the past, as everyone thought that it caused problems, especially heart problems.

Furthermore, it was said that one of the two effects of caffeine was to cause anxiety and insomnia.

“Some time ago, our perspective on the effect of coffee on health changed radically,” said Esther López-García, professor of preventive medicine and public health at the Autonomous University of Madrid, for BBC Mundo, a BBC Spanish-language news service.

The professor explains that in order to break this barrier with coffee, it is necessary to promote greater dissemination of studies made on the benefits of the grain which, for many, is essential for life because of the energy it from the.

Wine, the prolonger of life

We always hear only good things about drinking a glass of wine a day. Supposedly it can be beneficial for the heart or something like that. On the other hand, recent research indicates that not everything is rosy.

The problem is not with the wine itself, but with the alcohol. The World Heart Federation (WHF) published a review of a study showing that alcohol is definitely not good for cardiovascular health. Although it has long been known that alcohol prolongs life, it is just the opposite. At least that's what the research points out.

"In recent decades, the prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) has nearly doubled," notes the WHF report, "and alcohol has played a huge role in the incidence of many of them."

The argument used to justify the consumption of wine is based on the presence of resveratrol, a compound that is part of the group called polyphenols. It is believed that this group acts as antioxidants and that it protects the body against cell damage, thus reducing the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease.

As the doctor at the University Hospital of Salamanca explains, very large quantities would be needed. higher concentrations of this compound than are found in some doses of wine to obtain these effects in health.
