This Friday, the 27th, the judge of the Federal Regional Court of the 1st Region (TRF1), Carlos Augusto Pires Brandão, decided to authorize the rehiring of Cuban doctors who worked in the More Doctors Program. With that, the request made by the association that represents 1,700 health professionals who came from Cuba was granted.
According to the National Association of Medical Professionals Trained in Foreign Higher Education Institutions (Aspromed), doctors who came to the country in 2013 to work in the program Mais Médicos, established by then President Dilma Rousseff, had their professional ties interrupted during the Doctors for Brazil program, which came into effect during the government Bolsonaro.

Also according to the entity, the Health professionals Cubans who were selected in the 20th cycle of the program were under a two-year contract non-extendable terms, since the other exchange students had a three-year work contract, which could still be renewed.
When making the decision, the judge highlighted the importance of the program for serving a part of the population, such as those living in needy municipalities. Another important factor analyzed is the humanitarian crisis that the country is currently experiencing, in relation to the Yanomami indigenous people, a situation in which doctors could contribute a lot.
According to the judge, “the program makes it possible to implement public health actions to combat the health crisis that has taken hold in the region of the Yanomami indigenous people. There is a state of public health emergency declared, decreed through the Ministry of Health”. In addition, in the reasoning for his decision, the magistrate also made it clear that it is a matter that involves humanitarian issues in relation to Cuban doctors who are still in Brazil.
After the disagreements between the Cuban government and then-president Jair Bolsonaro, which occurred at the end of 2018, in which the rules for staying in the program were changed, the current Ministry of Health is evaluating the possibility of returning to the program.
