dusky tetraka, scientifically known as Bernieria tenebrosa, is a species of bird thought to be extinct until it was found again in Madagascar. During an expedition in the forests of that African country, a group located three specimens of this bird that had not been seen for over 24 years. This species suffers from the loss of its natural habitat and can now only be found in the forests of Madagascar. Learn more about the case:

A rare and considered extinct species of bird has been spotted in Madagascar. The encounter took place on the banks of mountain streams in a forest on the small African island. According to specialists, this species was only found on the forest floor, but the discovery reveals characteristics about these birds.
The species in question is a Bernieria tenebrosa, an olive-green bird with a yellow throat, super rare and sought after by biologists. Its rarity is such that it was included in the list of the “10 most wanted” by Search Lost Birds, a partnership that has been searching for rare species of birds since 2021.
Charity Organization Shipments
The birds were found during expeditions for a charity, The Peregrine Fund. In it, the members of the expedition found 3 Dusky Tetraka birds near the forest of the mountains, where there are remaining forests.
Initially, they found an animal near a stream that is on the Masoala Peninsula. Members used a mist net and a fine mesh trap to capture the animals. They report inspecting the nets frequently so that no animal is trapped or injured.
One of the members, John Mittermeier, reports seeing two birds in the woods near the creek high in the mountains. In his words: "It's a tremendously emotional moment - to be looking for something for so long and there it is", "Then it felt like a dream."
Another participant at the institute, Lily-Arison Rene, says that finding this species again is another important indication of the need to preserve the local biome.
