“Face with tears of joy” comes first. It accounted for more than 5% of all used emojis, according to the report. Heart comes in second during rankings from one to ten, respectively, followed by rolling on the floor laughing in third position, thumbs up in fourth and face crying out loud in fifth.
The report also analyzed emojis by category, flags, despite being the group with the most emojis, were the least used categories. Findings also include that the rocket emoji topped the Transport subset and that the biceps curl was used the most on body parts.
The results show that categories such as Smiley Face and Hands were some of the most frequently used emojis. Meanwhile, Plants and Flowers emojis were also used very frequently and dominated the 'Animals and Nature' category, despite being a smaller subgroup. 'Bouquet' is most commonly used in the plant flower category, and 'butterfly' is the most common animal emoji.
Unicode notes that the top 200 list contains major jumps. The biggest gains were the 'birthday cake' emoji, which climbed to #25. The 'balloon' emoji is now at the 48th position and the 'pleading face' emoji is now at the 14th position.
It is noteworthy that the coronavirus pandemic has done little to the popularization of microbe emojis, which barely made it into the top 500. Only two health-related emojis are in the top 100 used in 2021 – the hot and woozy faces. Note that at the moment there are only 3663 emoticons. The top 100 emoji comprise 82 percent of total emoji shares in terms of usage.
This data type is actually quite useful for the Unicode Consortium. This helps them understand and evaluate which emojis are most popular and helps them decide which characters to add next.
