Brazilian film director born in Maputo, Mozambique, one of the notables of the so-called cinema novo do Brasil Entered (1952) for the Institut des Hautes Études Cinématographiques (IDHEC) in Paris and specialized in direction, production and mounting. He was assistant to French filmmakers Jean Dellanoy, Abel Gance, Patrice Dally and Pierre Kast. before settling in Brazil (1958).
After having directed two unfinished short films, Cavalo de Oxumaré and Orós (1960), he debuted as an actor in Flavio Migliaccio's Os mendigos (1962). Bold, his most controversial success was Os Cafajestes (1962), a film that generated problems with censorship. for presenting the first nude scene in Brazilian cinema, starring actress Norma Bengell.
Despite having made most of his films in Brazil, also in France, Peru, Mexico and Mozambique. Among the most famous are: Os rifles (1963), which won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Festival, Os Deuses e os dead (1970), The fall (1976), Erêndira (1982), Ópera do malandro (1985), The fable of the beautiful Palomera (1988) and Quarup (1989).
