How does obtaining a CNH work currently?

This is the step-by-step process for obtaining a driver's license in 2023:

1. Observe age and minimum requirements

The minimum age to obtain a CNH varies according to the desired driving category. For category A (motorcycles) and ACC (mopeds), you must be at least 18 years old.

For categories B (cars) and AAC (automatic cars), the minimum age is 18 years. Meanwhile, for categories C, D and E (cargo and passenger transport vehicles), the minimum age is 21 years.

2. Documents required to enter the process of obtaining the CNH

  • Identity document (RG) or other official document with photo;
  • Individual Taxpayer Registration (CPF);
  • Proof of address;
  • Proof of electoral discharge (for those over 18);
  • Military enlistment certificate (for men over 18 years old).

3. Enrollment in a driving school

After gathering the necessary documentation, you must enroll in a Driver Training Center (CFC), also known as a driving school.

The first step is to take a theoretical driver training course, which addresses topics such as Traffic, defensive driving, first aid, among others.

At the end of the course, you will take a theoretical test, and, if approved, you will proceed to the medical exams.

4. aptitude exam stage

After passing the theoretical test, you will need to undergo a medical and psychological examination at a clinic accredited by the State Traffic Department (Detran).

These exams are intended to verify that you are physically and mentally fit to drive a vehicle.

5. Practical classes

As soon as you pass the medical and psychological exams, you can start practical driving lessons. The minimum number of practical classes varies according to the desired CNH category.

During classes, you will learn maneuvers, driving techniques and become familiar with the vehicle.

6. Practical driving test (Detran test)

After completing the minimum number of practical classes, you will be able to schedule the practical driving test, carried out by the Detran.

In this exam, an evaluator will check your driving skills, such as vehicle control, respect for traffic laws and safety.

If you pass the practical exam, you will receive a Permission to Drive (PPD), which is valid for one year. After this period, if there is no serious or very serious infraction, you will receive the definitive CNH.

With how many points is the CNH suspended?

First, know that the driver can receive several types of fines before being suspended and in the light, medium, serious or very serious categories.

Each fine category deducts a different amount of points from the driver's license. Previously, CNHs had a total of 20 points. After the most recent update to the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB), the limit increased to 40.

These are the amounts of points discounted in each fine category:

  • Minor infraction: 3 points;
  • Average infraction: 4 points;
  • Serious infraction: 5 points;
  • Very serious infraction: 6 points.

Upon reaching the 40-point limit, the CNH is suspended and the driver must undergo a recycling process to regain the right to drive.

However, the account to reach the limit is not linear and varies according to the severity of the fine.

New rules for license suspension

Currently, the right to drive can be suspended when:

  • The driver reaches 20 points, with two or more very serious infractions;
  • If the driver has 30 points and commits a very serious infraction;
  • When the 40 points are reached, without any very serious infraction or if you perform paid activity.

Stay tuned and avoid disorders!
