understand the study
A British study conducted research that reveals that eating a banana every day can help prevent cancer, as long as it is green. According to researchers, consumption can reduce the appearance of the disease by up to 60%, a considerable percentage. This happens due to a component that is present in green bananas, resistant starch.
- How was the research done?
The research was carried out with individuals with Lynch syndrome, a genetic condition that is characterized by a high risk of developing cancer. With this, the carriers were put on a diet rich in resistant starch that is present in green bananas.
After that, the researchers observed that the diet rich in resistant starch reduced the risk of developing cancer by more than 50%. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that resistant starch had an effect on the prevention of cancers that are difficult to diagnose, such as those of the gastrointestinal tract.
- Why does the banana have to be green?
One of the reasons for this is that green bananas contain a large amount of resistant starch, which mature bananas do not have. Also, when it comes to the effects, the resistant starch remained approximately ten years after the subjects who participated in the research stopped taking the supplement.
Researchers believe that this information could help many more people than those with Lynch syndrome. However, more research is needed to be sure that this hypothesis is confirmed.
