Chamber approves encouraging the responsible adoption of animals

The approval of Bill 50/19 proposes implementations for veterinary clinics, pet shops and other establishments that receive animals for donation. The intention is to make it clear to the public that these places have animals available for responsible adoption. Last Thursday, March 16th, the Chamber of Deputies approved the proposal.

With the approval of the deputies, the agenda moves towards the Federal Senate. The text foresees that the places mentioned above need to add posters that indicate to the public the offer of adoption along with the contact of the establishment - e-mail, telephone, Whatsapp– to facilitate adoption.

Responsible adoption approved in the Chamber

The author of the proposal is deputy Fred Costa (Patriota-MG), informing that the purpose of the agenda is to reduce the number of abandoned animals on the streets. Many of these pets suffer from abandonment and are subject to different types of risk situations in traffic, on rainy days and on very hot days.

In defending the proposal, the deputy says that throughout Brazil there are considerable numbers of animals domestic abandoned. Above all, it is an incentive for responsible adoption, showing that breeders only care about “breed” animals and profit monetarily by selling their puppies.

The institutions that receive the animals usually deal with diseases. They are animals rescued from the street and without an owner, being treated on site and are up for adoption soon after. The proposal of the text foresees that they need to be vaccinated, dewormed and with the treatments paid for by the establishment.

abandoned animals

Worldwide, the WHO (World Health Organization) estimates the existence of 200 million animals abandoned on the streets. There are 30 million cases that are repeated among the streets of Brazilian cities, with 60% of cases increasing significantly during the pandemic.

There are works by NGOs and institutions that rescue these animals, totaling more than 180,000 cases in the year 2022.
