The "end" of civic-military schools is dividing opinions in the country

Last Wednesday (12), the Government Lulaannounced the end of civic-military schools, created during the Jair Bolsonaro government. The decision was made by the Ministry of Education (MEC) and directly impacts around 200 schools in all regions of the country.

Despite having been announced a short time ago, the measure has already divided opinions between students and teachers. While some people are in favor, others consider that the model should be maintained.

What do those in favor of the measure say?

The opinion of the Brazilian Union of Secondary Students (Ubes) is as follows:

“A school model that ends up depriving students of freedom of expression”, commented Jade Beatriz, president of the entity, who also argues that this type of institution “does not support the formation of critical thinking and ends up excluding a portion of students”.

She defends the school as a democratic organization that encourages students to think for themselves, assuming the role of the school environment.

“To make you go beyond the walls of the school, to be able to question what you live today. It is necessary to ensure that the school is not only an instrument for combating social inequality, but is also able to contribute to the formation of critical thinking”, completes Beatriz.

The opinion of those who are against the change

On the other side of the story are those who consider the measure a step backwards. Below is the opinion of Sandro Mira, director of Colégio Estadual Cívico-Militar Beatriz Faria Ansay, in Curitiba:

“Of course, this is not good news, since the implementation of the program was a great victory, a great gift for our community”, he said.

The college in question was considered an example for this teaching format by the former president himself, Jair Bolsonaro. For Mira, the success of the educational institution is directly linked to the adoption of the civic-military format.

“Our school was totally discredited, both by the community and by the government (…). Today, we have a school that is beautiful and is taken care of by the community. There is no depredation in our school”, he concluded.

O MEC decided to end the project with the justification that the conservation of the model is not a priority and that the defined objectives must be achieved by another way.

In an official note, the Deputy Secretary for Basic Education, Alexsandro Santos, advised against maintaining the program due to coherence and cohesion problems. In addition, according to him, the program “extrapolates the purpose of the Brazilian Armed Forces”.
