2023, the year of federal contests: more than 4,400 vacancies announced

Many future Gen Z graduates believe that stability is crucial in an uncertain job market. Large-scale layoffs are often reported in the news, although unemployment numbers remain low. Furthermore, recession warnings continue to ring despite more than a year having passed, and millions of jobs are not being filled.

Despite the downsizing news, most workers still have influence in today's job market, according to Valerie Workman, chief legal officer at Handshake. Workman says college students are paying attention and that they are more focused on finding the right job that will keep them engaged than on finding jobs in general.

She also points out that Gen Z is not just looking for jobs to get ahead, but is looking for work that values their talents and where they can feel valued.
