Scary animal hiding in the sand is photographed
During her last trip, Marisa Ishimatsu, accompanied by her friends, who are also great lovers of photos of reptiles and amphibians, had a great opportunity.
They decided to take a trip to Namibia, located on the African continent, to take pictures of the six species of vipers that live there, including the Peringuey viper.
Marisa Ishimatsu, talks about her photo: "It takes a minute for you to see the snake's eyes, and when you do, it's surprising to realize that it's looking right at you."
Marisa was very excited about the expedition, however, not even in her dreams did she imagine that she would take a photo so close to this dangerous animal.
Again she talks about the photo: “This was my most successful photo to date. I have been a photographer for over 10 years, mainly of reptiles and amphibians. I've photographed hundreds of snakes from around the world… There's something about this photo that inspires a strong reaction.”
In order to find these vipers, Marisa and her group of friends hired a local tour company to help them with the challenge.
After all, they were looking in an unknown location, with a high potential of being attacked in the middle of the desert. And so they went alongside tour guide Dayane Braine.
Marisa explained that: “Because the sand is so soft, you can often see tracks showing where the snakes moved from one bush to another during the night. If you're really good at tracking (like Dayne), you can follow the tracks and find the snake at the end of them. It sounds simple, but the sands move so much that the tracks disappear soon after they are made.”
After photographing the snake, the group made sure that everything was fine with it and followed their script. Additionally, they were able to photograph all six vipers they wanted to find and photograph on that trip.
And finally, the photographer and herpetologist said the following:
“I hope this photo helps people appreciate how special snakes are. Peringuey vipers are perfectly adapted to their environment and, like all snakes, they are worth protecting. I hope people can see the beauty of snakes, even if they find them scary. With a little respect and understanding, we can coexist.”
