This story serves to introduce the news released by the North American Space Agency (NASA) itself. The company sponsored a competition that encourages the development of state-of-the-art technologies to meet the food needs of astronauts.
A very different way of cooking
Due to the NASA contest, a New York company took the 'astronaut menu' in a very different direction than expected. This is because the company in question specializes in producing fuel for vehicles with negative carbon.
The company's name is Air Company and it is based in Brooklyn. It is one of the first to offer an efficient way to recycle carbon dioxide exhaled by an astronaut in flight.
The substance can be used to make yeast-based nutrients for protein shakes, which would be used to nourish the crew in trips very long.
The carbon conversion technology was initially developed to transform the product into high purity alcohol. It would be used in aviation fuel, vodka and perfume.
However, the original recipe was modified to suit the goals of the Deep Space Food Challenge, the NASA-sponsored contest. The result is a regular consistency shake made from milk protein.
According to reports from “tasters”, the flavor of the food is not the best, but it is very acceptable and resembles a type of gluten-free tofu called seitan.
