Smithers is the "handyman" of a large company led by Burns, who is always plotting evil plans and exploiting his employee, who already revealed in one episode to have done about 2,799 errands for her boss, including putting him to bed and preparing his meals. Few people know that Waylon Smithers was purposely created to look like Wayland Flowers, famous puppeteer and gay symbol of the United States. Wayland created the character The Madame, a pompous puppet who was always heavily made up, with bright clothes and jewelry, in addition, she was an eccentric woman. This character was loved by gays and is still honored today.
Wayland Flowers was one of the first openly gay artists, so the creators of the animated series o paid homage to Smithers, also a homosexual character with a name that is very close to that of the puppet king: Waylon.
