Study shows how employees feel
A Paychex survey explored the perception of a thousand professionals about some pain points in the work environment. The main basis of this survey is related to collaborative work, an important factor in many places.
In that study, almost 50% of employees said they often helped their colleagues, with 22.9% of people doing the favor without expecting the other to reciprocate. If they wanted the help to be “paid”, 19.5% would like the colleague to cover their workload while were out of the office, but 23.5% would like their partner to do the same or similar task in replacement.
In addition, almost 60% believed that people did not return favors, that is, they believed that they helped much more than they were helped. 57% of the 1,000 respondents believed they were asked to perform an extra task because they were the “experts” or “best” at it.
Results may not be the most encouraging.
Of the participants, 83% felt that they were doing activities that were out of their position normal working hours, as these functions were for people who went on vacation or who neglected some task. When referring to gender, women were more likely to offer help, however they were the ones that most given “household office work” or less important tasks that others usually don’t want to do.
An important piece of data also obtained was that co-workers from the same team or the same department were the most likely to take advantage of others. Hourly employees experience this the most. Despite the information gathered, it can be beneficial to help a colleague from time to time, but when there is no reciprocity... it is normal for us to feel as if we are being used. This can make the environment toxic.
So, if you have a business, know that it is important to ensure that the company is safe and healthy, as it should be a place where everyone can feel heard and respected.
