Foods that need to be avoided for your brain's sake

A study published in the scientific journal Jama Neurology, carried out by the University of São Paulo, proved that people who have the habit of eating processed foods frequently have a much greater decline in brain function than those who have a diet healthy.

Ultra-processed foods are high in sugar, salt, and saturated fat. Because of this, researchers came to the conclusion that it is thanks to the inflammatory proteins present in these foods that our brain naturally ends up having a cognitive deficit. It was possible to reach this conclusion after identifying and reducing the volume of the hippocampus, a region of the brain located in the temporal lobes.

The study

The researchers selected 3775 volunteer people aged between 35 and 74 years to analyze the neurological development and the result was really worrying for those who usually consume food ultra-processed. Volunteers who were 50 years old and had the habit of eating industrialized foods had 28% more speed in neurological decline.

Other conclusions

A researcher from the United Kingdom, Duane Mellor, from Aston University, states that the results may be related only to the lack of consumption of healthy foods by individuals. Therefore, the studies are insufficient to define the connection between the ingestion of sugar, salt and fats with the neurological deficit.

So if you are passionate about this type of food, you don't need to be so distressed. Duane Mellor still says that although he had some results, the research is not a determining factor enough to define the connection between industrialized food and the acceleration of the system's reduction neurological.

Other harmful effects of ultra-processed foods

Although there is still no common conclusion about the consequences of these foods for the brain, they can be very harmful to your health in other respects, after all foods like these are modified to enhance their flavor and prolong the shelf life. its validity. Therefore, it is important to avoid them to avoid complications such as:

  • Increased cardiovascular disease;
  • Increased autoimmune diseases;
  • Increased chances of developing different types of cancer;
  • Diabetes;
  • Obesity;
  • Depression.
