The new Government has been asked to make changes to the current model of secondary education. In a note, members linked to the government have already ruled out the possibility of revoking the current plan, but are studying adaptations of the system, which is heavily criticized by specialists. Several politicians and members of the left have spoken out against changes in secondary education and frequently demand that it be reviewed.

On his social networks, Camilo Santana, Minister of Education, says he receives daily requests to reassess the current high school system. The minister says he agrees that there are flaws in the model and reveals that the MEC is studying possible changes in the future.

New high school model

The current secondary education, approved during the Temer government in 2017, came to expand the school curriculum with knowledge from other areas. Now, the curriculum has optional subjects, in which each student chooses an area of ​​interest, with five options: Mathematics and its Technologies, Languages ​​and their Technologies, Natural Sciences and their Technologies, Human and Applied Social Sciences and technical education vocational.

The new model, despite having been approved in 2017, only started to be applied in schools in 2022. With its arrival, several obstacles arose, mainly related to the difficulty to meet all the teaching areas stipulated in the reform in schools without the structure to provide the knowledge.

A criticism of several specialists is that subjects related to the human sciences, such as sociology and philosophy, have increasingly lost their space and are no longer sought after. There is also the issue of lack of training for teachers in the areas and increased inequality, especially in public education.

MEC during the Bolsonaro government

During the Bolsonaro government, the MEC did not outline measures for organizing or adapting schools to comply with the new system. There was a lack of coordination actions, technical and financial support and professional training.
