A computer science student, Edward Tian, developed an "antagonist" to the technology. Called GPTZero, the application allows you to detect whether the author of a given article was a person or ChatGPT. According to the opening sentence on the website of the new tool, “human beings deserve to know the truth”.

The novelty was launched on January 2nd and is being widely used by teachers, who seek to discover whether a certain work or academic article was actually prepared by the students or if it was simply generated for the chatbot created by OpenAI.

The platform developed by Tian is completely free and works in a relatively simple way. To find out the probable origin of the text, just paste what was written in a box that appears on the website. Afterwards, a report is displayed with details of the analysis of the article, accompanied by a graph that shows the individual evaluations of each sentence.

When the report is available, it is possible to go down the page and click on the button that displays the result, thus obtaining an answer clearer about the origin of the text, that is, if it was written by artificial intelligence or if it was really elaborated by a being human.

To assess the provenance of the text, GPTZero mainly analyzes two elements:

  • “Overflow” of the text: it is analyzed if the sentences of the content posted on the site have a standard length or if they vary between larger and smaller sentences. In the case of texts written by real people, sentences do not usually have a size standard;
  • Perplexity: this aspect analyzes exactly how complex the writing used. In this way, texts that are more simply identifiable by the tool are more likely to have been written by a chatbot while human texts are more difficult for GPTZero to understand.

Finally, it is important to emphasize that the tool is not infallible, but it is a great help that can still undergo many evolutions.
