Meta (Facebook) is being sued for making use of an already registered trademark

A Meta Platforms, the company that controls the Facebook, was sued for misuse of an already registered trademark in Federal Court in Manhattan, in an open lawsuit on July 19 by MetaX, a New York company that has been creating immersive virtual reality experiences.

MetaX informed the court that it was "crushed" by Facebook's rebranding to "Meta", and that its ability to operate under the Meta name was crippled. Thus, MetaX accused Meta (Facebook) of infringing the law by using its trademarks and requested, through a court order, that the name “Meta” cannot be used by the social networks to provide goods and services that overlap with those of MetaX, in addition to also requiring an unspecified amount of money, for damages morals.

The plaintiff company also informed in the process that it had already discussed a possible partnership with Facebook in 2017 and that a company executive praised one of MetaX's experiences that year as something "incredible and spectacular".

MetaX ended by saying that Facebook's rebranding will drive it out of business, and that it has also led people to mistakenly believe that the companies would be affiliated.
