American NASA astronaut born in East Derry, N.H., first American to travel through space. He earned a Bachelor of Science at the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis (1944), and served in the Pacific during World War II. He graduated from the United States Naval Test Pilot School (1951) and Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island (1957) and became a naval test pilot for the Navy (1958).
The following year he became one of seven astronauts chosen for the first group of Americans to participate in the U.S. Mercury (1959) from more than 500 candidates. He became the first American to enter space (1961). Although he performed a sub-orbital flight that lasted a little over 15 minutes in space at an altitude of 187.5 km, aboard the Freedom 7, on May 5 of that year, he pioneered the United States to become the great innovators in exploration space.
Almost ten years later (1971), he became the fifth man to walk the moon when he commanded the mission aboard the Apollo 14 moon spacecraft. With Edgar Dean Mitchell they took two lunar tours totaling 9.25 hours, where they explored Cone Crater to collect samples. On his return, he was promoted to Admiral of the United States Navy, the first astronaut to reach such a class.
He received an Honorary Master of Arts from Dartmouth College (1962), an Honorary Doctorate of Science from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio (1971) and a Franklin Pierce College Honorary Doctorate of Humanities (1972). Retired from the astronaut and navy team (1974) and died in Monterey, California.
