Many people had their jobs damaged during the Covid-19 pandemic, but a survey shows that women were the majority in this regard. According to data released by the IBGE, which were taken from the Central Register of Companies (Cempre), between 2019 and 2020, 825,300 people lost their jobs, 71% of which were women.

Among the number of people who had a job between 2019 and 2020, there was a drop of 0.9% for men and 2.9% for women. According to Thiego Ferreira, who was the research manager, of the 20 sectors analyzed, 13 dismissed employees, and in three of these the reduction was greater than 10% in the number of women.

This is related to activities that employ more men and others that employ more women. It turns out that sectors that employ more women, such as education, for example, suffered a loss of 1.6% of workers, while those that employ more men saw an increase in staff.

Commerce alone concentrates 19% of salaried women, and during this period, there was a drop of 2.5%. But even in this area, the number of women who lost their jobs (3.2%) was greater than the number of men (1.9%).

“Women participated in sectors that had a drop. So, for example, education, housing and food are sectors in which, traditionally, women have a greater participation. In education, almost 67% of the workforce is made up of female labor, in food it is almost 56%. These are sectors that we can see that suffered very large impacts with the pandemic and caused this difference in decline”, explains Ferreira.

According to him, in 2009, the female workforce reached 41.9% and grew every year, reaching 44.8% in 2019, the highest percentage ever seen. However, the pandemic caused this participation to drop almost three years ago.
