Statistics Canada noted in a report released on May 26 that, through early March 2022, employers Canadians were struggling to fill 1,012,900 jobs across the country, up 60.5% from the same period in 2021. The top three industries that have been severely impacted by the lack of skilled labor are as follows:

  • Retail trade (109,200 jobs);

  • Health and social assistance (154,000 vacancies).

In this regard, the health and social care sector continues to see a growing shortage of staff. In March 2022, a record number of jobs were lost, totaling 154,500, up 16% from the previous month, as the country continues to struggle with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Overall, job openings increased across all provinces, with British Columbia recording the highest number of openings at 178,300.
