Popularity

Coaching as a discipline and profession is relatively new. Prior to 2000, no one in the academic community studied this area.

Its first application in a business context was in the 1980s. The man responsible was Sir John Whitmore, co-founder of Performance Consultants International, and his colleagues.

Sir John worked closely with Harvard pedagogue and tennis expert Timothy Gallwey. Timothy is the author of 'The Inner Game of Tennis' and 'The Inner Game of Work'. These papers effectively sum up the purpose of modern performance coaching:

Performance = potential – interference

increasing the potential

Both the ‘Inner Game’ and performance coaching focus on improving performance by increasing potential and decreasing interference.

Tim Gallwey, Sir John Whitmore and many others who now work in the business field all started in sport. However, sports training remains rooted in ancient behavioral models. These models were the inspirational foundation of coaching.

By adopting a coaching leadership style, organizations are beginning to unlock the potential of their people and allow them to see the world with more holistic eyes.
