Study reveals that psychopathic men camouflage their personalities

The study conducted by Kristopher J. Brazil and colleagues aimed to investigate whether men with psychopathic traits tend to mimic prosocial personality traits in the context of dating.

They sought to find out whether male psychopaths would be more likely to modify their personality traits when faced with a dating scenario.

There is something called “behavioral imitation”, which can be a mechanism used by individuals with high levels of psychopathic traits to prevent your negative traits from affecting your interactions social.

Mimicking facial, vocal, and postural expressions during interactions can help create a sense of connection and empathy with others, even if it's only superficial.

The study involved 164 male college students from universities in Ontario, Canada, focusing on heterosexual relationships and students who identified as gay were not included in the sample.

The majority of participants were of white ethnic background, representing 64% of the sample, and the majority were also single, with a rate of 59% of participants reporting their marital status as single.

The results suggest that psychopathic traits may influence men's willingness to present a misleading image, demonstrating more prosocial personality traits to attract female sex partners feminine.

Psychopathic personality traits are characterized by a set of attitudes, including a lack of respect for the rights and feelings of others and an extreme lack of empathy.

the experiment

At baseline, participants completed an assessment of personality traits. The designed assessment was useful for measuring different aspects of personality, including honesty, humility, affection, extroversion, agreeableness, and openness to experiences.

Participants also completed the Psychopathy Self-Report Scale 4, which is used to assess psychopathic traits in individuals.

Study participants watched a video where an actress recorded a dating profile. The actress, who presented herself as a 20-year-old university student, described herself as spontaneous, fun, sentimental and a "hopeless romantic".

At the end of the video, she expressed that her ideal partner would be someone who loves to have fun, is spontaneous, loves adventure, and who she can feel comfortable relaxing with alone.

After watching the video, participants were asked to rate their own attractiveness to the woman in the video based on these characteristics presented.

Participants were then instructed to complete the personality assessment again, this time in order to make themselves more attractive to the person in the video.

They were given the following instruction: "Please answer the following questions considering how you can appear more attractive to the person in the dating profile video."

Thus, the researchers sought to analyze whether men with psychopathic traits would show a tendency to greater ability to adjust their personality traits to become more attractive in the eyes of the woman featured in the video.

Result of the experiment

The results of the study showed that, on average, participants showed an increase in honesty, extraversion, agreeableness, and openness to experience scores after watching the affair.

This suggests that men, in general, are inclined to adjust their personality traits when instructed to mimic and appear more attractive, even if they lack psychopathic traits.

The researchers noted that the biggest changes occurred in the personality traits of honesty, affection, and extroversion.

This indicates that men with more expressive psychopathic traits are more likely to modify those specific traits to present themselves more attractively.

The study reveals important traits of male behavior, although the research was done only in the university field. To protect yourself, all information is valid.
