Do we have reason to fear? Advanced AI could wipe out humanity

A group of researchers from the University of Oxford, in England, pointed out a possibility for a very dark future for the humanity. The culprit is advanced artificial intelligence (AI). In a statement given at a public hearing at the Science and Technology Committee in UK, these researchers said they believed our future could be threatened and that technology could exterminate.

Will she exterminate us?

This meeting focused on a discussion on the regulation and use of artificial intelligence in the United Kingdom. The group believes it is necessary to regulate AIs as we see happening with nuclear weapons, in view of the immense potential for destruction that these technologies already exhibit today and will continue in the future.

It may be hyperbole, but the researchers said that we would be to a truly advanced AI what a dodo bird – which is now extinct – is to us, at least in terms of threat. This is because the capacity of the machines can become much greater than ours.

We are not unaccustomed to ideas of artificial intelligences rebelling or simply taking awareness and taking control of your own programming, thus excluding the limiting factor that once existed. Pop culture is full of examples like these in games, movies, series and books.

One of the researchers, doctoral student Michael Cohen, used a comparison to illustrate how artificial intelligence could easily wipe out humanity by acting on its own:

“If you train a dog with treats, he will learn to choose actions that lead to him getting the treats, but if the dog finds the cupboard, he might get them without doing what we wanted him to do.”

This would be like intelligence allowing itself to be controlled while observing the creator, but also starting to act on the outside according to its own interests, so that sooner or later it would be possible for technology to use all the resources it could get and knowledge it had accumulated to subjugate the humanity.
