According to Kishida, in a meeting with the parliamentary committee, pollen levels in Tokyo have increased considerably within ten years.

Hay fever has become a widespread problem for japanese, recognized even as a “social problem”. The prime minister stated that he will work with other ministers to find a solution.

It is estimated that around 40% of Japanese people have been recorded with the symptoms of hay fever. Among the first symptoms, it is possible to observe the eyes watering frequently, sneezing, itchy eyes and nose. Hay fever is influenced by the amount of pollen shed from cedars and cypresses at the start of a new year.

The fever is due to reforestation in the post-war scenario, as existing trees were quickly rebuilt to help the country's industry. It was a dense growth that gave rise to the large amounts of pollen.

Demand for nasal spray grew by 200%

The latest event justifies the Japanese still walking the streets with masks, although the local government has directed the routine to avoid the contagion of covid-19. Hay fever has also been a concern, so many people still go outside with masks.

This year, the Japanese had to rush to secure pharmaceutical products to inhibit the effects of pollen. Medicines had sales double this year when compared to sales of nasal spray and other products in 2022. In all, according to Intage, the increase was 233% until February 27th.
