Among the 400 respondents aged between 18 and 29 years old, 49.4% said they did not want to have children, which represents the highest percentage registered in the last three annual surveys of the company.

The survey results, released at the end of March, come after data from the Japanese government showed that the number of births in the country fell below 800,000 last year, recording the first drop since 1899, when registrations started.

To try to reverse the trend of declining birth rates in the rapidly aging country, the Japanese government launched April the Agency for Children and Families to oversee children's policies, including combating child abuse and poverty.

The 2022 survey by Rohto Pharmaceutical Co. also covered 800 couples between the ages of 25 and 44, discovering that 48.1% of married couples who wish to have children are cooperating with their partner's fertility efforts partners. That number marked a significant drop from the 60.3% recorded in the 2020 survey.

A company official speculated that the drop could be attributed to the fact that people are passing less time with their partners as life gradually returns to normal after the coronavirus pandemic coronavirus.

Although data shows that Japan's birth rate continues to decline, the government has taken steps to try to reversing the trend, including the promotion of family policies and the creation of an agency dedicated to promoting birth.
