The state of Pernambuco is located in the Northeast Region of Brazil. Its territorial extension is 98,146,315 km², according to the population count carried out in 2010 by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), totals 8,796,448 inhabitants, corresponding to approximately 4.6% of the Brazilian population, distributed in 185 counties. The demographic density of the state is 89.6 inhab/km². About 80.2% of the population lives in urban areas and 19.8% in rural areas.
According to IBGE data, the ethnic composition of the Pernambuco population is made up of browns (53.3%), whites (40.4%), blacks (4.9%) and Indians (0.5%). As for the structure by sex, men represent 48.1% of the population, and women, 51.9%.
The population distribution in the state occurs disproportionately, the urban centers located close to the coast concentrate a high percentage of the population of Pernambuco, while the sertão is little town. The state's HDI (Human Development Index) is 0.718. Social indicators show a life expectancy of 67.1 years, infant mortality has high rates 35.7 deaths per thousand live births; the illiteracy rate is 17.6%.
Recife, capital of Pernambuco, is home to a population of approximately 1.5 million people, in a territorial extension of 219 km².
