The community agent who has been working for 20 years at Recanto das Emas in
Federal District, Hermelina Pereira Canxangá, states the following: “I am extremely emotional. Until then, we were considered health workers, not professionals. This affected several issues, including our healthiness”.The text related to this new law had been approved by the National Congress on December 21, but was awaiting sanction before it would come into effect.
In Brazil, there are an average of 265,000 community agents who work in the field of family health for disease prevention and health promotion in community actions at home, collectively or individual. In addition to the 265,000 community agents, we have another 61,000 professionals fighting endemic diseases who work in epidemiological and environmental surveillance and also in disease control in the country.
Nísia Trindade, Minister of Health, stated the following: “I would like to highlight the role of community health agents and agents to combat endemic diseases, understanding their role as health agents, who can monitor our population more closely, close to homes, territories, contributing to comprehensive care, to basic care for health".
Agents active in the country, according to the Ministry of Health, receive their salary entirely with funds transferred by the Federal Government. BRL 7.8 billion were invested in 2022. For the year 2023, an increase of 27% is being forecast, which would take us to R$ 9.9 billion.
