Several UN agencies came together to prepare the report on food security of the Latin America and in the Caribbean. The results were worrying in several countries, mainly in Venezuela. It was nominated as the country with the most people going hungry right now.
Who prepared the report?
The document was prepared by Food and Agriculture (FAO); World Health Organization (WHO); the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF); the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Program (WFP).
Data obtained
Venezuela and the Bolivarian Republic were at the top of the malnutrition list, as 22.9% of the Venezuelan population is malnourished. Next is Ecuador and Bolivia with 15.4% and 13.9%, respectively.
Malnutrition data highlighted the worrying situation in Colombia, Paraguay, Peru and Suriname, which had rates greater than 8%. Brazil, in turn, being an overpopulated territory, despite being the country with the highest number of malnourished people, has one of the lowest rates in the territory: 4%.
What are the indicators?
The malnutrition indicators were based on the supply, consumption of food and the energy needs of the population, taking into account their demographic characteristics. The report also underlines that: “This indicator was designed to capture a state of energy deprivation lasting longer than one year, without reflecting the ephemeral effects of temporary crises or inadequate nutrient intake essential”.
The report was also careful to compare data from before and after the pandemic. In this way, it was possible to perceive that the countries where the number of people in food insecurity increased were: “Ecuador (3.8%), Honduras (2.2%), Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (2.1%)” and in Colombia (2%)”.
Since 2015, the number of people going hungry in Latin America has nearly doubled. It went from 17.2 million to 34 million people.
