According to the Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), the accumulated high of bonbons and chocolates in bars from January 2022 to January of this year is 13.61%.
In comparison, the group of beverages and foodstuffs accumulated an increase of 11.07% in the same period, while the general inflation rate is 5.77%, which is more than double the increase in the price of chocolates.
In the country, the accumulated increase until January 2023 surpasses only that registered in February 2017, when the rising prices came to represent 17.23%, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
What causes prices to rise?
It is not possible to say which are all the elements that caused the rise in the price of chocolate bars and the others, however some factors can be listed as one of the main points for an increase in prices.
Firstly, there is the increase in production costs, especially due to the high price of milk, which is one of the main ingredients to produce chocolate bars. Cocoa and sugar are also inputs that show an increase throughout 2022, so final prices continue to change.
The increase in the demand for chocolates ranks second among the reasons for the rise in food prices. That's because, with the proximity of Easter, the demand for this type of candy usually grows a lot. Finally, the impact suffered by the American stores, which is currently in the process of judicial recovery, is also reflected in the increase in the price of Easter eggs, chocolates and other foodstuffs. Yes, believe it if you want!
The company has always been responsible for a large commercialization of chocolates in the period leading up to Easter. To escape inflation, the consumer can adopt certain alternatives, such as preparing some desserts with chocolate, give preference to artisanal production, which usually offers good prices, or migrate to brands with more affordable prices.
