Young people continue to be excluded from the job market; how to change it?

Data from the Ministry of Economy show that last year the rate of unemployment was at 14.7%, and that 31% of this total was made up of young people. This could just be a circumstantial crisis as a result of the pandemic, but it is not. For at least six years, young people aged between 18 and 24 have had difficulty finding a job.

One of the main reasons for such difficulty is lack of experience. Unfortunately, even knowing that it is very difficult for young people to gain experience in specific areas at the beginning of their careers, the job market still demands it. Another reason for this is the conflict between generations. Young people who were born in the “technological era” can cause some strangeness in more traditional companies, as the difference between generations is still a taboo for many.

However, everyone who is consolidated in careers today has already gone through difficulties when looking for a new job, process surrounded by small challenges and uncertainties, such as, for example, the doubt when filling out a resume, or what to talk about during a interview. And that's why we need to open our minds to this type of hiring, leave the doors open, instead of finding obvious obstacles.

In this sense, the Young Apprentice program is a good opportunity for this, as it is the chance for young people to have their first professional opportunity. But not everyone has this information, and often not even the necessary encouragement. If the schools were connected with the project, encouraging the professional training of young people and offering a structure in which they could develop their skills and abilities in a practical way, this search would certainly be easier.

Another possible way out would be to train more young people in cutting-edge technology, an area in which, in the future, it is estimated that there will be a large professional deficit, something around 530,000 vacancies remaining until 2025 – according to Brasscom data.

Another possibility would be to encourage young people to use technology to their advantage. Using sites aimed at hiring and developing socio-emotional skills are examples of this and tend to reduce the unemployment rate at this stage of life. We are going through the era of knowledge, and encouraging young people to always look for this to keep up to date with the market is extremely important.
