The European continent does not have homogeneous characteristics, as disparities are present in various aspects such as natural landscapes, climate, politics and culture. The continent has several ways to be regionalized, one of them is classifying in Western and Eastern Europe.
Some scholars on the subject, through spatial, economic and cultural analyses, carry out a classification of the continent into four distinct areas in which Western, Northern, Central-Eastern and Southern.
Regionalization before and especially after World War II generated an abstract border, which means the emergence of an ideological barrier between two groups of countries that make up the same continent, on the one hand the allies of the United States (capitalist) and on the other side those who support the Soviet Union (socialist), consolidating once and for all Western Europe and Eastern.
With the decline of the USSR, and also of socialism, several autonomous republics emerged that made up the Soviet territory, however, independence did not guarantee a effective insertion in the market economy arising from the legacy of the productive system of the planned economy that prevailed in the USSR, which failed to keep up with the others savings.
Northern Europe is located in the far north of the continent, this area has the coldest climate in the entire European territory, the countries located in this part of Europe are: Norway, Sweden (Scandinavian peninsula), Denmark, in addition to the new Republics of the former Soviet Union: Latvia and Lithuania, Finland. These countries have fishing and wood extraction as the main economic activities, this restriction is due to climatic conditions that compromise, for example, agricultural production.
Central-Eastern Europe is constituted by the group of countries of the former Soviet Union that had their independence, they culturally possess great complexity and ethno-cultural diversity, such as the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary, as well as Ukraine, Georgia and Azerbaijan.
Southern Europe is bathed by the Mediterranean Sea, located on the Iberian Peninsula. This region is home to Portugal, Spain and Greece, which for much of history were centers of cultural dispersion.
Portugal and Spain were responsible for unveiling the continents of Africa and, mainly, South America.
