Since 2020, there has been a project aimed at installing a Zipline at the Sugarloaf Mountain, in Rio de Janeiro. However, the Federal Regional Court of the 2nd Region (TRF2) suspended the installation and works to make the practice viable.
Previously, authorization would have been granted by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (Iphan). However, the judge Luiz Paulo Silva Araújo Filho maintained the suspension, claiming that the works are causing the dismantling of rocks in the hills.

In this way, the hills of Sugar Loaf and Urca are suffering deterioration with these works. However, both are located within the complex listed by the Federal Government.
See what IPHAN alleges
According to the Institute, the works were only released with the authorization of the Rio Heritage of Humanity Institute (IRPH) and the Municipal Secretary of Environment and Climate. In a note published in April of this year, IPHAN declares that:
“[IPHAN] instructed the company contracted by Parque Bondinho Pão de Açúcar to adopt a series of procedures and solutions in order to preserve the scenic value of the Sugarloaf Mountain, which underlies the listing. The solutions proposed by Iphan were included in the approved project”, they say in a note.
The park CablewayPão de Açúcar states in a note that it complied with all the requirements and procedures imposed by Iphan for the installation of the zip line.
It also makes it clear that it follows all the regulations of all licensing bodies and that it makes itself available to reinforce that the practices are legal and respect Pão de Açúcar's assets.
Judgment
However, with the determination to suspend the works, the process will undergo another judgment by the Seventh Specialized Panel of TRF 2, under the guidance of the rapporteur and judge Araújo Filho.
Until a determination, the zip line, which would join the Sugar Loaf and Urca hills, are paralyzed and are no longer expected to be inaugurated in the second half of 2023.
The project, on the other hand, suffers a lot of criticism from local residents, since other companies have already caused enough damage with works to make the project viable. tourismin the region.
According to the residents, in these neighborhoods the damage is great and there is no one to guarantee that there will be conservation of the local fauna and flora.
