Bill provides for an increase in the deadline for renewing a driver's license

Brazilian drivers will have a longer period to proceed with the renewal of the CNH (National Driver's License), going beyond the current determinations of the traffic legislation.

Currently, you have a period of 30 days after the expiration date to update your license.

This proposal was introduced through the Bill (PL) No. 2496 of 2022, which has already obtained approval from the Chamber of Deputies' Road and Transport Commission and seeks to extend this limit to 60 days.

Deputy Bruno Ganem (PODE-SP), who is the rapporteur for the proposal, explains that the law can help drivers to organize themselves better.

“By extending the deadline to 60 days, we will be giving drivers a break so they can better organize their time to take the new physical and mental fitness tests,” he said.

The document is still being processed in a conclusive manner and still awaits the evaluation of the Committee on Constitution, Justice and Citizenship (CCJ) of the Chamber.

If approved, it will be subsequently submitted to the Federal Senate for examination before being sanctioned or not by the President of the Republic.

How to renew CNH?

To carry out the renewal of the license, the driver must go to the local unit of the Department State of Transit (Detran) closest to your residence and start the necessary procedures as soon as the CNH expire.

However, there is the alternative of requesting a new copy of the card up to 30 days before the expiration date of the document.

After renewal, the electronic version of the license will be available within three days on the Digital Traffic Card, while the physical version will be delivered within 14 days to the address registered by the driver.

According to the provisions of the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB), driving with an expired driver's license is a very serious infraction.

Under these circumstances, the caught driver will be penalized with a fine of R$ 293.47, in addition to having seven points recorded on his CNH and the possibility of having his vehicle seized.
