What are the symbols and what are they for?

In total, there are five groups of symbols: wash, bleach, dry, iron and dry clean. However, within each group, there are variations of what can or cannot be done with clothing. Therefore, it is possible for you to know, with the symbols, if it is possible to wash heavier fabrics in the machine, such as duvets and rugs.

For example, the washing symbol is represented by a “glass” of water. That is, when it appears, it means manual or machine washing, and if it has the representation of a hand, it can only be hand washed. Following logic, the glass has a number, it means that this is the maximum temperature of the water. If it has an X, it means that it is not possible to wash it with water. Finally, if the glass has a line at the bottom, the spin must be reduced.

Now, the target is what has the triangle design. Therefore, if a triangle appears with a CL inside, it means that you can use chlorine bleach, and if it has an X, that product should not be used.

The symbol for drying is represented by the drawing of a square. When it has a circle and a dot inside, it means that you must dry it at a minimum temperature, and when there are two dots, at a maximum temperature.

When the square has a circle and an X, it is not possible to use a dryer, since the half circle means that it must hang dry. Finally, the square with three vertical lines means it should hang dry without twisting, and the square with a horizontal line means it should be dried horizontally without twisting.

Symbols on clothing labels

On clothes, the ironing symbol appears with an iron, and if it has an X, it is because it cannot iron. However, what changes in the others is the temperature: the iron with one point inside is to be ironed at a maximum of 110º, two points, 150º, and three points, a maximum of 200º.

Finally, the dry cleaning symbol is the one with the circle design. If the circle has an A, it means that all solvents can be used. With P, hydrocarbons or perchlorethylene must be used, and with F, hydrocarbons may be used. The circle with a dash underneath means restriction on the use of water and/or centrifugation. And finally, the circle with the X indicates that the piece cannot be dry cleaned.
