What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a medical condition that causes bones to become more porous and lose density, making them break more easily. In addition, this is a condition that primarily affects women after menopause. However, it can also affect men and younger people. This condition can cause the loss of density in all the bones in our body, especially in the wrists, spine and femur.
New osteoporosis prevention study
In a study published in the journal BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health, 66 women were separated into two groups and instructed to consume 57 grams of Jarlsberg cheese or about 50 grams of Camembert cheese during a randomized clinical trial. The guideline for this study was as follows: Women were to eat cheese 1 for six weeks and, after that period, spend an additional six weeks eating cheese 2. After that, some results were concluded.
Results for the study
After the whole procedure, the participants had some blood tests to verify hypotheses. So, subject to certain variables, the scientists behind the study found that eating Jarlsberg cheese helped prevent bones from becoming thinner.
Additionally, although both cheeses are similar in fat and protein content, Dr. Young points out that Jarlsberg is rich in vitamin K2 (which improves bone health) as well as calcium and vitamin D. Because of this, Jarlsberg cheese is the most recommended to be able to help prevent osteoporosis.
