1. Nanotechnology in a Roman chalice
O Lycurgus Cup – a 1,600-year-old Roman chalice – changes color depending on which side light shines through it. The Romans added some extremely small particles of gold and silver to the chalice. It is these nanoparticles that cause the glass to change color.

In 2012, several 19th century tombstones washed up on Ocean Beach in San Francisco. This happened due to the closure of cemeteries within the city limits. Tombstones were used as a building material in various projects, including a seawall.
