Almost half of fourth-year students in Brazil do not master reading.

A Education it has always been seen as a sensitive issue for all nations that wish to evolve in various aspects. However, Brazil still has a long way to go to solve the main problems in the sector. After all, recent data shows that 4 out of 10 elementary school students fail to master basic reading skills.

Data from the 2021 International Study of Progress in Reading (PIRLS) point out that 40% of students in the 4th grade of elementary school have this type of difficulty. That is, they cannot recover in the mind or reproduce part of what was read.

Worrying rates

In all, 65 countries participated in the survey by the International Association for Departmental Education Assessment (IEA). Metrics indicate that children at this school stage already need to master the reading and writing to acquire new knowledge.

According to the information released, in another 21 countries, the rates do not exceed 5% of students. Ireland, Finland, England, Singapore and Spain are among the best rates presented.

What's worse is that only 13% of students have mastered enough knowledge to be proficient in reading. Another 23% have only basic knowledge and skills in the same aspect.

Which students participated in the study?

This study evaluated approximately 400,000 students in more than 13 thousand schools. All chosen regions were seen as reference standards for analysis. The average score achieved by Brazilians was 419, which places the country at the lowest level of the pedagogical proficiency scale (there are four levels in all).

The performance of the Brazilians was similar to that of Kosovo and Iran. Being superior only to Jordan, Egypt, Morocco and South Africa. The best results were from Singapore, Ireland and Hong Kong.

There were 187 Brazilian schools selected, with 248 classes and almost 5,000 students from 24 states in the country. It was the first time that Brazilian education participated in the international study on literacy.
